Beyond Beehives

Poetry & Prose Commemorating Utah's First 125 Years of Statehood

Typewriter Award

Strong at Broken PlacesNow available at Amazon

The League of Utah Writers, in cooperation with Thrive125 and Utah Humanities, presents a look back at the first 125 years of Utah’s statehood. This collection of poetry, prose, and essays paint a picture of Utah as a place through its history and its future. Journey with us through hidden stories of unknown lore, forgotten by folks and history books—sometimes even on purpose. These unique works come from a fascinating and diverse array of authors, each exploring what Utah means.

This is what literature does: it witnesses and reports. Before you get too wrapped up in any idea of journalism, record keeping, or "objective reporting of history" let me just say: stop. All is a story and here are stories of moments in my State's history, ideas and mistakes, celebrations and aspirations. A book worthy of time capsules and every Utahn's shelf.

My own little piece for this august book is indeed short. NOTE FOUND IN AN ABANDONDED CLOCK is a flash fiction (a story told in < 1000 words) about one of three great tragedies of Utah's pre-state days. It won't be hard to figure it out which one in this haunting little missive. My little story won a Bronze Typewriter Award in Flash Fiction Category. It's a great piece.
